The Furies (1950)

Tough as nails Barbara Stanwyck…who doesn’t love that. Dame Judith Anderson rocks my socks and Walter Huston is acting royalty! I LOVE THIS MOVIE! Western Noir!
Big Daddy Walter Huston built up his ranch from scratch! Borrowing money from banks and hiring helping hands (pays them in TC’s which are worthless), but still, they are loyal.

Barbara Stanwyck plays daddy’s girl who will soon inherit the ranch and money! She wants it bad tooooo!
Of course it’s not that easy…Huston has been carrying on low profile warfare with the Mexican’s he took land from. This causes a riff between Stanwyck and one of her life long friends, who lives on the land. Then we have Wendell Corey, who she’s in love with…DAD HATES HIM TO!!! Something tells me this father-daughter relationship is going down hill and nothing can make it worse…
WAIT A MINUTE! THERE IS SOMETHING…GO FIGURE!

Walter brings back a woman (Judith Anderson) who is actually quite a lovely lady. Very nice but Stanwyck doesn’t like THAT ATTTTT ALLLL!!!!

YIPESSSS!!! Nahhh actually it’s the scissor throwing that we have to watch out for in this flick…not a pretty scene, but def. engrossing!!

Now that’s scary…yet kind of pretty…nothing like dressing up for…oh wait…i don’t want to give it away if you haven’t yet watched! Which you really need to because this movie is one of the best and one of my very favorites!

Anthony Mann directed it and the cinematography is to die for! (Oscar nominated). The we also have Dame Judith Anderson who is sooooo good. One of my very favorite supporting actresses! You know her best as Mrs. Danvers in the Hitchcock classic ‘Rebecca’

That link will take you to the blog I wrote about her a couple months ago! :)
Criterion released this film and it’s well worth the designer price. Newly restored and in hi-def. Audio Commentary, rare interviews and video. Also comes with a cool booklet!
35. The Night Walker (1964)

Bette Davis and Joan Crawford weren’t the only ones to dive into horror pictures of the 1960’s…what makes this one so fascinating to watch is the fact that it stars ex-couple Barbara Stanwyck and Robert Taylor.
Who doesn’t love watching awkward make out scenes…just makes it all that much more interesting to watch the movie. Not as good as Whatever Happened to Baby Jane …but definitely worth a watch. Especially around the Halloween holiday.

I love the opening sequence of this film and the dreams are super creepy especially the fake mannequins…uhhh…yea!

Barbara Stanwyck…SCREAM QUEEN!
Give it a watch…3 and 1/2 screams outta 5!
36. Jeopardy (1953)

Quick paced thriller that I love just as much every time I watch it.

The happy family takes a vacation in a deserted area near the ocean in MEXICO!! Hmm…any thoughts about that today??? Probably not the smartest thing to do…but it makes a good movie so what the hell…
Bring it on!

They make it to there destination only to find trouble! SURPRISE!!!!
Barry Sullivan gets his leg trapped underneath a huge piece of timber in the ocean and the tide threatens to drown him. Barbara Stanwyck takes the car ALONE in desolate Mexico to find help…her son stays behind and keeps dad company…he also makes an amazing pot of coffee…Hope you like it strong.

Barbara runs into trouble while looking for help. Escaped prisoner Ralph Meeker takes her hostage! OH NO…and OHHH the things she has to do to get him to help save her husband! Hope they used protection…ahem…
I love tough witted Barbara! I love this movie!
37. To Please a Lady (1950)

The stars of this film make it worth a watch…but other then that…I could have done with less racing sequence’s.

A former war hero and midget car racer meets his match with an beautiful independent reporter who blames his reckless tactics for an accidental racing death.

I love both stars…but they could have made a better movie…
38. The Great Man’s Lady (1942)

Really this is about a great woman who is married to a pain in the ass husband…who gets all the credit…
a 100 and something year old lady tells her life story in flashbacks, to an up and coming young reporter…

Barbara…is that really you!???
The great man in this case is Joel McCrea!

What a handsome couple! Nice quick paced film…nothing special but worth a watch! :)
39. Internes Can’t Take Money (1937)

Yet another wonderful movie starring Barbara and Joel McCrea!
Also the first film starring the famous, Dr. Kildare.
Barbara was married to a bank robber and served prison time for events she didn’t commit. They had a child together and now the hubby is dead. She gets out of prison a sickly woman and begins searching for her baby. The only people who can help her are naughty gangsters and a very handsome Dr. Kildare.

Good film…give it a watch! :) Included in the TCM Barbara Stanwyck collection!

There’s more then just healing feeling going on here…

Have I ever mentioned how handsome I think Joel McCrea is…*drools*
Some are typical, Others you may not have heard of…Of Course are tastes are different, but I thought I’d share my opinions throughout several posts!
1. The Palm Beach Story (1942) Can Claudette Colbert get any cuter? This is the zaniest a screwball comedy can get. Has the silliest ending, but with Preston Sturges (Sullivan’s Travels, The Lady Eve, Miracle of Morgan’s Creek) it always seems to work. I’ve seen this at least a dozen times …maybe more and it’s just as funny every time.

Claudette Colbert is in love with husband Joel McCrea, but is tired of living on their income. (They have glorious chemistry!)

After a run in with ‘The Weenie King’ in her apartment, he gives her 700 dollars. With this she decides to head to Palm Beach for a quickie divorce with hubby McCrea following her the whole way down. On her way she meets the very rich Rudy Vallee (How can you not crack up at the name J.D. Hackensacker III), His fast talking sister Mary Astor and her protegee, the very klutzy Toto! There is truly never a dull moment.
Behold the Weenie King!

“I’m the Wienie King! Invented the Texas Wienie! Lay off ‘em, you’ll live longer.”
Let’s not forget about the Ail and Quail Club members she meets on the train as well…William Demarest…’nuf said! HILARIOUS!

Do your self a favor a watch this…And if you’ve already seen it…do yourself a favor and watch it again!
2. Clash By Night (1952) One of Barbara Stanwyck’s best performances and one of my very favorites. She play’s Mae Doyle who comes back to her hometown a cynical woman. Tough as nails. No man can tame her… Gotta love that.

She gives in and marries softy Paul Douglas and they have a baby together. Then they live happily ever after…uhm…no. She becomes restless and begins a hot torrid affair with tough guy Robert Ryan. Score!!
Mae Doyle D’Amato: Jerry! If you come any closer to me I’ll smash your face in with the first thing I can lay my hands on!
Jerry D’Amato: You’re no good!

This scene is the one we wait for the whole time…Smokin’! Hands under shirt and all…
Marilyn Monroe has a small role as Stanwyck’s soon to be sister-in-law, which makes this film even more worth watching. Seeing those two act side by side is something to see.

Earl: “Where did you get that perfume?”
Mae: “From a bottle…”

3. Julia Misbeahves (1948) Finally. A comedy with my favorite screen couple, Walter Pidgeon and Greer Garson…Walter is pretty much sex on wheels in my opinion *drools* Not only that, but it’s a comedy that’s actually funny.

Greer and Walter are married with a daughter, but Greer leaves when her daughter is a month old, to pursue a life on the stage…which isn’t going as well as she writes. Years pass by, and daughter (Elizabeth Taylor) is about to marry someone she’s not really in love with.

She secretly writes her mother and invites her to the wedding with out the knowledge of Walter and his mother, the divine Lucile Watson! Needless to say, they are not very happy about it. Then of course mayhem ensues.

Peter Lawford is the man Taylor is reallly in love with! Leave it to Mom to fix that!!

Cesar Romero has the role of the very cockney acrobat that falls in love with Greer Garson and becomes engaged to her without realizing she’s still married to Walter…Mary Boland nearly steals the show as his drunken mother. Just try not to laugh when she sings “Save me…savvve me…please somebody save me!!” Cracks me up! Then again, she usually does.

Nigel Bruce gets honorable mention as the man Garson uses to get a lot of money in order to get to her daughter and by her a bridal shower gift. Little does she know, he’s Walter’s best pal. WHOOPS!

Garson with Nigel Bruce, who you probably recognize from Alfred Hitchcock’s thriller “Suspicion” among many other classics.

Many more posts to come :) This one is a short one! Only 3…I have tons more!! Toodles!
1. Gargolyles (1972) …Grayson Hall That’s why…
Poor lady always seems to die at the end of her movies. Gotta love her though. Makes me thirsty for booze…
2. Della (1964) Rare Joan Crawford THAT’S WHY!
Nothing like seeing Crawford slap somebody around!!
3. Love Among the Ruins (1975) Laurence Olivier and Katharine Hepburn…who cares about any other reason then that…?
4.The House That Would Not Die (1970) …Barbara Stanwyck in a complete spook fest…gotta love that. I DID! Creepy. Watch it in the dark before you go bed…Stanwyck RULES!
5. 5th Avenue Girl (1939) …Ginger Rogers yes…but who can resist Walter Connley and his charming ways…? Cute!!
6. Paradise For Three (1938) …Frank Morgan and Edna May Oliver. Two of the best character actor/actress EVER! Cute and fast paced…
I realize I’ve only watched 6 out of 300…but I was bored and felt like posting what i’d watched…MANY MORE TO COME :) This is fun! 294 More films…6 months!
