Some are typical, Others you may not have heard of…Of Course are tastes are different, but I thought I’d share my opinions throughout several posts!

1. The Palm Beach Story (1942) Can Claudette Colbert get any cuter? This is the zaniest a screwball comedy can get. Has the silliest ending, but with Preston Sturges (Sullivan’s Travels, The Lady Eve, Miracle of Morgan’s Creek)  it always seems to work. I’ve seen this at least a dozen times …maybe more and it’s just as funny every time.

Claudette Colbert is in love with husband Joel McCrea, but is tired of living on their income. (They have glorious chemistry!)

After a run in with ‘The Weenie King’ in her apartment, he gives her 700 dollars. With this she decides to head to Palm Beach for a quickie divorce with hubby McCrea following her the whole way down. On her way she meets the very rich Rudy Vallee (How can you not crack up at the name J.D. Hackensacker III), His fast talking sister Mary Astor and her protegee, the very klutzy Toto! There is truly never a dull moment. 

Behold the Weenie King!

“I’m the Wienie King! Invented the Texas Wienie! Lay off ‘em, you’ll live longer.”

Let’s not forget about the Ail and Quail Club members she meets on the train as well…William Demarest…’nuf said! HILARIOUS!

Do your self a favor a watch this…And if you’ve already seen it…do yourself a favor and watch it again!

2. Clash By Night (1952) One of Barbara Stanwyck’s best performances and one of my very favorites. She play’s Mae Doyle who comes back to her hometown a cynical woman. Tough as nails. No man can tame her… Gotta love that.

She gives in and marries softy Paul Douglas and they have a baby together. Then they live happily ever after…uhm…no. She becomes restless and begins a hot torrid affair with tough guy Robert Ryan. Score!! 

Mae Doyle D’Amato: Jerry! If you come any closer to me I’ll smash your face in with the first thing I can lay my hands on! 
Jerry D’Amato: You’re no good! 

This scene is the one we wait for the whole time…Smokin’! Hands under shirt and all…

Marilyn Monroe has a small role as Stanwyck’s soon to be sister-in-law, which makes this film even more worth watching. Seeing those two act side by side is something to see.

Earl: “Where did you get that perfume?”

Mae: “From a bottle…”

3. Julia Misbeahves (1948) Finally. A comedy with my favorite screen couple, Walter Pidgeon and Greer Garson…Walter is pretty much sex on wheels in my opinion *drools* Not only that, but it’s a comedy that’s actually funny. 

Greer and Walter are married with a daughter, but Greer leaves when her daughter is a month old, to pursue a life on the stage…which isn’t going as well as she writes. Years pass by, and daughter (Elizabeth Taylor) is about to marry someone she’s not really in love with.

She secretly writes her mother and invites her to the wedding with out the knowledge of Walter and his mother, the divine Lucile Watson! Needless to say, they are not very happy about it. Then of course mayhem ensues.

Peter Lawford is the man Taylor is reallly in love with! Leave it to Mom to fix that!! 

Cesar Romero has the role of the very cockney acrobat that falls in love with Greer Garson and becomes engaged to her without realizing she’s still married to Walter…Mary Boland nearly steals the show as his drunken mother. Just try not to laugh when she sings “Save me…savvve me…please somebody save me!!” Cracks me up! Then again, she usually does.

Nigel Bruce gets honorable mention as the man Garson uses to get a lot of money in order to get to her daughter and by her a bridal shower gift. Little does she know, he’s Walter’s best pal. WHOOPS!
